Web design is even more easier than you think. Everyone can design a web site by using today’s technology. You can create web sites by using some web services as easy as sending an e-mail.
But having a web site for being different was important ten years ago. Brands don’t just want to be on the internet. Everybody is already online, and their rivals too. That’s why they want websites that develop their business and increase their productivity. This is also important for your personal projects.
Good horse shoeing isn’t enough to be a good blacksmith. You have to be well informed about biology and orthopedy to understand and solve horse’s movement problems. You make money by touching horses. There is a lot of money on our planet. But not everybody wants to spend it. Everybody wants low costs and high quality. And every boss looks for a way to employ less people. Because other bosses request big projects with low budgets. You have a few supportes in your team if there aren’t any world leaders like Coca Cola or Durex in your company’s customer list.
In order to build a successful business model, you need to know more than the codes. So your boss and customers will become more happy and have a reason to pay you more. Maybe you will be the boss of your own projects in the futere. Try to imagine a boss who codes well but doesn’t know anything about marketing. How long can he live? Clean your weapons, you become Rambo!
1. Coding
Codes are at the first place of a web site and you have to master the programing languages that you use. So you can open a right way between the users and the materials.
For me, the most difficult thing is making a decision about what to do in web design. Not how to do… But when I decide, I realize that I have no idea about how to do it :). Of course it’s impossible to know everything for a human. We all have our limits. Nowadays only God knows everything. And it seems that it’s always be the same.
We can all learn something new. You don’t need to be genius in this job. But your background must be strong to learn new things. Even when you build a tower of playcards you have to start from below. XHTML, CSS, Java Script or whatever. You have to master the programming languages you are using. No water, no life. No code, no web site.
2. Graphic Design
No no… Don’t get me wrong when I say graphic. You’re not an artist and probably you will never be invited to the opening of an art gallery. So you will use less alcohol and empty words during your life. Web design isn’t an art. It’s all about solving problems. The solution to each isn’t the same. A website doesn’t always need graphic design. Some of them may not even have a logo. Logos, backgrounds, menus, titles, corners, photos… When you start talking about those you need to open the graphic editor on your computer. This is generally Adobe Photoshop. Your color, shape, size, font and file format choices are very effective for the usability and appearance of a website. So you also have to know about graphic design.
3. Typography
Typography is the technic of forming the writing. It is composed of the font (the type of writing), colour, font size, line length, spaces between the lines, etc.
To understand an article, we have to see it first and then read it. If we have a problem in any of those things, we won’t be able to understand the article. So we have to notice easily and read without having trouble.This is what a good typography ensures us for our websites and the graphics we create.
4. Usability
The layout of the content on the page and the visuals tells the visitor what kind of information he could reach here. If the choices about that subject are successfull, the visitor interested in the content of the website will think he’s on the right address. According to the statistics, the users visiting a website for the first time decide in a few seconds whether this site is useful or not. To get what you want from the visitors and also to give them what they want, the website you designed should be very usable.
You have to evaluate the users carefully. How do they navigate through the site, on what do they click most, what are the features of the equipment and software they are using? For example, a website which takes aim at the web designers can be designed at high resolution. That’s because web designers usually use good monitors and graphic cards. But a website planned to be used mostly on mobile connection should be at a lower resolution and more simple.
Naturally, the choice of software will also vary according to the target group. As graphic artists generally use Mac, they use Safari as their browser. The choice of most internet professionnals is Mozilla Firefox. But some of the latest users never change their browser. Most of them are a fan of Internet Explorer, and also many of them do not update their browser and use older versions. The bad news are that all of those browsers interpret the sites differently and don’t support some of their features. Even if the browsers are developped conformable to the standarts in the last years, you should be careful about the conformability of your website with browsers.
5. Search Engine Optimisation
Search engine optimisation is a process that intends your web site to be listed on the top for searches concerning the content of your website.
People search for everything they want over Google which is the most popular search engine. Naturally we are using the algorythm of Google for all optimisation processes. By making the search engine optimisation, your website reachs your target group effectively and economically.
The purpose of the search engine optimisation is to attract the visitors who are interested in your content to your website by helping Google to scan it fast and effectively. Generally, at least %80 of the visitors of a new website come over the search engines. So a website that can’t be found is not different from a website which was never published.
6. Online Marketing
Websites have to reach their target group. They can’t survive otherwise. And most of the time, customers have no idea how to make that happen. I’m sure there’s no specialist about that subject in your team or in your entourage. Guess who’s going to do that job? I’m sorry, it is not easy to be Rambo :).
By applying the right methods for online marketing you can reach your target group by using your budget in the most effective way. This is a comprehensive job. The texts to be used on your website, the art of communication, publicity management, e-mail lists, social networks, blogs… You have to be an expert about this. Because the internet is the only channel where you can choose your target group and analyze the consequences.
Rambos Never Die
It is very hard for someone who masters those main subjects not to be successful if he works with discipline. The possibility of a successful person to stay umemployed is equal to the possibility of a transatlantic to get in through your window. If you spend enough time, you too can make it. Besides you can use all the information you know about those subjects to found the business you dream about. In other words, those informations ensure that you easily find a job even if you run into great chaos in your career, that you get sufficient money and that you found your own business in the future. Don’t worry, Rambo is the only hero of all episodes :).
